Brake, the road safety charity: Who we are and what we do

Brake, the road safety charity

A death or serious injury on roads should be a rare and unusual event, but the sad reality is that five people die on UK roads every day, and many more are facing catastrophic, life-changing injuries. Every day, five families get the devastating news that a loved one has been hurt or killed in a road crash.

When the worst happens, Brake is there to help. Since 1995, the national road safety charity has been supporting families who have been bereaved and injured in road crashes.

Supporting families bereaved or injured in road crashes

Through its National Road Victim Service, Brake provides specialist emotional and practical support to families in their darkest and most difficult times. A team of specialist caseworkers help people cope with their grief, and navigate the complex, unfamiliar procedures that often follow a road crash, including police investigations, court cases and claims for financial support. The right support, at the right time, can change the course of someone’s life.

Campaigning for safer streets
Brake also campaigns to stop crashes on our roads and reduce harm when a crash happens.

Brake challenges the Government to adopt solutions that are known to prevent crashes and reduce harm. The charity works collaboratively with other organisations and researchers to strengthen the evidence base, raise awareness and build a critical mass of support for change.

This year, Brake is focused on five key campaigns:

  • Default 20mph speed limits on all roads in built-up areas across the UK
  • Strengthening licensing to safeguard young, newly qualified drivers
  • Zero-tolerance on drink-driving
  • All new vehicles to have life-saving technology fitted as standard
  • All organisations to be required to monitor and report on incidents involving work vehicles
