The importance of driver wellbeing
This session will explore how mental health, fatigue, stress and wider driver wellbeing directly affect collision risk, decision‑making and professionalism on the road. The session will also touch on understanding neurodiversity (e.g. ADHD, autism, dyslexia) and how small changes in communication, training and workload can help neurodivergent drivers thrive safely.
Key themes include spotting early signs of stress, fatigue and poor mental health in drivers, practical steps to reduce workload pressure, creating supportive policies for reporting issues without fear of blame and engaging stakeholders – HR, H&S, line managers and senior leadership – so wellbeing is seen as a shared responsibility, not just 'a driver issue'.
